The Team Behind Common Stone Studios

“That’s always been in my mind my metaphor for a team working really hard on something they’re passionate about. It’s that through the team, through that group of incredibly talented people bumping up against each other, having arguments, having fights sometimes, making some noise, and working together they polish each other and they polish the ideas, and what comes out are these really beautiful stones.” – Steve Jobs

MATT JOHNSONCo-Founder/Singer-Songwriter/Musician
Matt started playing piano at age four and quickly caught the music bug. Growing up in a household where music was always present, Matt absorbed as much as he possibly could from his environment. Piano forged the foundation for his continued and varied musical pursuits both through high school and college. Matt grew to learn and play not only the piano, but guitar, bass, mandolin, ukulele, trombone, trumpet, baritone, and virtually anything else he could get his hands on.
Though Matt did not professionally pursue music as a career, entering the education field, music has always been a driving force for him. He really found his niche while playing in both college and present worship bands at local churches. He fell under the tutelage of some veteran musicians and honed his skills primarily on piano/keys/synth and guitar. It was in this setting that the practical application of theory, the ability to listen to the entire mix of the group, and the skill to find the appropriate musical pocket in which to play formed.
As an educator and former English teacher, Matt dives deep into the process of songwriting, and loves to collaborate on any musical project presented.
Currently, Matt plays in the acoustic duo Way Back When (with Sam Williams), the band Escape Post (with Sam Williams, Neil Holloman, Garret Holdren, and Rob Gresko), and the Greenview Alliance worship team.
In late 2017, Matt (with Neil Holloman) co-founded Common Stone Studios in Williamsport, PA where he and Neil work collaboratively with artists seeking to create unique music and to realize their own dreams and goals of musical creation.

The Studio’s Conception

Neil and Matt met once, and only once – and our first conversation revolved around music. They didn’t see each other for quite a while, until at our home church we re-met. Again, the conversation turned to music. Matt was looking for a drummer for his band, Escape Post, and knew the quality percussion that Neil could provide. Neil was looking for that “next musical adventure.”

Things instantly clicked for the two, and Neil quickly found a home within the band. At the same time, Matt was beginning construction on a rehearsal space/studio for Escape Post. It didn’t take very long for the two to realize their unique addition to one another’s skill sets. So in 2017, Matt and Neil co-founded Common Stone Studios located in Williamsport, PA. They immediately began recording together and quickly began building a small library of collaborative pieces.

At present, Common Stone Studios continues to work with individual artists, local worship teams, and bands to record, produce, mix, and contribute on a variety of musical projects.
